  • Affordable legal plan that gives young adults access to a law firm as they navigate adulthood
  • 64% of young adults wish they could call a law firm with a quick question
  • 24% are simply intimidated by the idea of seeking legal help

ADA, Okla. (August 24, 2026) — LegalShield announced today the launch of its Young Adult Legal Plan, a new offering designed to provide young adults and students ages 18 to 24 with affordable access to a law firm for the kinds of legal issues they're most likely to face as they gain independence and take real ownership of their adult lives.

Starting with Legal Peace of Mind

The Young Adult Legal Plan offers legal support across a range of situations young adults may encounter as they navigate life in their late teens and early twenties. The Young Adult Legal Plan includes:

  • Tenant Service: Covers lease review, eviction assistance, landlord disputes, and security deposit recovery when renting an apartment or home.
  • On the Road: Tickets happen. Includes legal advice and access to court representation for moving violations and license reinstatement.
  • Financial & Consumer Services: Assistance for consumer goods and services issues and preparation to act in small claims court when members have problems with products purchased.
  • Safety & Protection: For when things feel unsafe or out of control. Assistance with a protection order related to domestic violence, bullying victim support and representation, and 24/7 emergency access for covered legal emergencies.
  • Legal Protection: Offers advice, negotiation, and court representation for members when the stakes are real and people face first time misdemeanor charges of possession of an illegal substance or public intoxication. Additionally, the plan covers social media account suspension support.

"For over 50 years, we’ve built our name on equal access to justice at a fair price and young adults deserve that same access the moment they turn 18,” said LegalShield CEO Warren Schlichting. “We want to give young adults a head start in learning how to harness the legal system. It’s about putting a real attorney within reach and giving them the confidence to know how and when to use that resource.”

The Reality of Living on Your Own

Many young adults choose to dismiss everyday legal situations or handle them alone, even when support is available. Yet according to a recent LegalShield Intelligence (LSI) survey, 64% of respondents say they have sometimes wished they could call a law firm and ask a quick question:

  • 54% would consider using a law firm to review an apartment lease before signing
  • 47% would seek legal advice with debt collectors, but 28% don’t know law firms can help
  • 42% would handle a speeding ticket themselves, despite 71% knowing law firms offer help

Why Young Adults Don’t Call

The LSI survey also found that cost is the biggest barrier keeping young adults from seeking legal help (54%), but it isn’t the only factor. Many also face uncertainty about where to turn or feel intimidated by the process as 28% reported they don’t know how to find the right law firm and another 24% are simply too intimidated by the idea.

“Living on your own for the first time is exciting, but it also comes with new responsibilities, and no one gets it right out of the gate,” said Schlichting. “We created this plan to break the ice around legal conversations, give young adults a first place to turn when questions come up, and provide reassurance they’re not alone.”

What the Young Adult Legal Plan Costs

The LegalShield Young Adult Legal Plan is available for $9.95 per month (billed at $119.40 with an annual membership). The plan offers access to affordable legal guidance for the everyday challenges that can come with living away from home — from their first lease or first moving violation on the way to their new job. Coverage also extends to certain misdemeanor matters, offering advice, negotiation, and court representation when the stakes are real. The Young Adult Legal Plan is not available in Texas, New York, or Canada.

About the Study

The Young Adult Survey was conducted by LegalShield Intelligence (LSI) in August 2026 among 448 U.S. adults ages 18–24. LSI is the research and data arm of LegalShield. Since 2021, it has analyzed nearly 10 million requests for legal help across LegalShield’s nationwide network of provider law firms. LSI pairs that behavioral data with original consumer legal research, including the Young Adult Survey.
